Are you looking for a global privacy law book or data protection book? There are many countries that have privacy, data protection and security laws. It can be very confusing to find all of them and compare them. All the relevant information is not available on the Internet. Getting a global accurate view is problematic. A book or handbook can be very useful to achieve this. But which book is best? Are they up-to-date?
The best data protection book
In our view, one of the best books is called The Global Privacy and Security Law (GPAS) book by Françoise Gilbert. It analyses the privacy, data protection and security laws, usages, and trends of 66 countries on all continents. In the interests of full disclosure, we have been writing the chapter for South Africa on the POPI Act since 2009. But we do not get any benefit for promoting it. Because each country follows the same format you can quickly compare different jurisdictions.
It is also updated often to ensure that it remains up-to-date. The law and situation change all the time and therefore the book needs to change constantly. Being a lever arch book, pages can easily be removed and replaced. One shortcoming of the book is that it covers very few African countries.
