Hundreds of you have attended our one day workshop on the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI). Thank you for your support – we greatly appreciate it. We still have many people wanting to attend (often due to recommendations from previous attendees) so we are holding it again in Johannesburg on 21 April 2015 (book now), Cape Town on 26 May 2015 (book now), Johannesburg on 23 June 2015 (book now) and Durban on 21 July 2015 (book now). The greatest compliment you could give us is to refer our practical workshop to someone you know. One day is enough for you to get a great awareness of POPI. Two days is too long. We know you can’t spend a lot of time away from the office, so we make sure you know what you need to know in the shortest possible time.
If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.
We have also noticed that many people want a greater awareness of just one aspect of POPI. They want to zoom into the specific aspect of POPI that interests them and look at the detail. So, we are running insightful workshops on some specific topics. Focus on what is relevant to you. We have arranged for brilliant professional speakers to run each course.
POPI and Pension Funds (for trustees and administrators)
Pension funds process a lot of personal information, like the employment or financial history of a beneficiary, or personal information concerning a beneficiary’s health or sex life. Funds also have other third parties (like administrators) who process the personal information for them. It is the responsibility of the trustees to ensure that the fund processes personal information lawfully in accordance with the conditions for lawful processing in POPI. David Luyt, one of our attorneys, has recent practical experience working with pension fund trustees. He is holding half day morning workshops in Johannesburg on 10 June 2015 (book now) and Cape Town on 23 June 2015 (book now). Cost is R1,750 ex VAT.
POPI and Healthcare (for people in the healthcare industry)
POPI is likely to have a big impact on the healthcare and related sectors. It treats information about the health and well-being of individuals as especially sensitive, and lays down strict rules about how this information can be handled. Many of you also process information about the health of your employees. Andrew Weeks, one of our attorneys, has recently been helping many in the healthcare industry to comply with POPI in a practical way. He is holding full day workshops in Johannesburg on 22 April (book now) and Cape Town on 24 April (book now). Cost is R1,995 incl VAT.
POPI and Human Resources (for personnel managers)
Employers and managers are legally obliged to protect the personal information of employees. Apart from privacy, the law also protects employees from identity theft and other perils. Risk management is especially important in industries and enterprises where there are thousands of employees. The mining industry is a good example, considering all the personal information and records that exist relating to the health and medical histories of the employees. Graham Giles, one of our attorneys, has years of practical HR experience and is a fascinating speaker having lectured for many years. He is holding half day morning workshop in Johannesburg on 11 June 2015 (book now) and Cape Town on 2 June 2015 (book now). Cost is R1,750 ex VAT.
POPI and Marketing (for marketers and advertisers)
The laws that apply to marketing and advertising have recently changed dramatically. The Consumer Protection Act (CPA) has commenced and it has a huge impact – the playing field has changed. The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) is also going to have a huge impact, especially on direct electronic marketing. These laws have a big impact on all forms of marketing and advertising, including digital, online, social and mobile. Nicholas Hall, one of our attorneys, is particularly active in the area of promotional competitions, customer loyalty programs and digital marketing where he helps organisations ensure that their marketing models are fully compliant. He is holding a half day morning workshop in Johannesburg on 4 May (book now) and Cape Town on 12 May (book now). Cost is R1,750 ex VAT.
POPI and Information Security (for IT security officers, IT managers, and CIOs)
The threat to information security is as real as ever. At the same time, the legal obligations on organisations to secure the integrity and confidentiality of the information they process are growing. You have been securing your information for years for business reasons, now the law (in the form of POPI) also requires you to do so. Information Security is now a legal obligation. You cannot claim you were not aware of your obligations. And failure to comply has serious risks associated with it. David Luyt, one of our attorneys, has recent practical experience. He is holding half day morning workshops in Cape Town on 17 June 2015 (book now) and Johannesburg on 9 June 2015 (book now). Cost is R1,750 ex VAT.
