Webinar | Fulfilling your responsibilities as an Information Officer | Members and Public
18 June @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
You, as the Information Officer, are responsible for ensuring that your organisation complies with POPIA and PAIA. The law clearly outlines your responsibilities, and you must fulfil them. There will be consequences if you don’t. The Information Regulator is gearing up to take enforcement action. It now has roughly one hundred employees and is putting the necessary machinery in place to take action (for example, electronic reporting of breaches through its portal, a complaint management system and enforcement officers).
The Information Officer also protects people’s data privacy and, therefore, their freedom, and ensures the organisation builds trust through transparency. They also ensure their organisation can commercialise data (law)fully.
The time to fulfil your responsibilities is now.
By law, the head of your organisation is the default Information Officer and is and remains accountable. The head is usually the CEO, managing director or the top executive management. For smaller organisations, it could be the founder. This might be you or your boss.
Join us for this webinar in which we will set you on the path to fulfilling your responsibilities as an Information Officer.
This focused session will help you understand what fulfilling your responsibilities as an Information Officer requires. You’ll gain clarity on your duties under POPIA and PAIA, explore the consequences of inaction, and decide how best to move forward. You have options. Whether you take on the role yourself, delegate specific tasks appropriately, or outsource the role, you will leave this webinar with the confidence to move forward.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure or simply want to ensure you’re on the right path, this session is for you. Join us and take a confident step toward fulfilling your responsibilities as an Information Officer in South Africa.
Outcomes of the Information Officer webinar

- Decide on the action you will take to fulfil your responsibilities by considering the available options.
Audience
Information Officers have an essential role to play in society, and we want to help them do it well.
- Default Information Officers: CEOs, managing directors, and senior executives are default information officers by law. All organisations should have a default information officer who is registered with the Information Regulator and who is accountable and responsible for data protection and access to information compliance within their organisation. If you are this person, you should attend this webinar.
- Designated or Deputy Information Officers: Anyone appointed as a designated or deputy information officer.
- Acting Information Officers: Legal, compliance or governance professionals tasked with implementing POPIA and PAIA in the organisation.
This event is not for Chief Information Officer (CIOs), nor is it for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs).
