Tanika Upasani is interested in the intersection between law, technology, and people. Before studying law, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in History and Psychology, which shaped her approach to legal thinking, research, and writing.
During her postgraduate LLB studies, she chose Cyber Law and Intellectual Property Law as electives, drawn to the challenges that emerging technologies create in these areas. She is currently completing a master’s degree in Intellectual Property Law, focusing on AI and emerging IP issues, and is particularly interested in how the law can evolve alongside the digital world while remaining practical and accessible.
Alongside her academic work, Tanika is passionate about community service and access to justice. Her volunteering experience reinforced her belief that the law should be clear and practical, especially for those without easy access to legal support.
At Michalsons, Tanika brings this commitment to plain-language communication to life. She empowers members of Michalsons’ programmes to take practical action in response to the latest legal updates or developments. She does this by finding important updates, analysing them and then explaining to clients in plain language what they should do about them. Empowering clients to answer the questions that matter most: “So, what?” “Why should I care?” “And what must I do?”

Tanika is a legal intern at Michalsons with a strong interest in technology law and electronic intellectual property law. She conducts research and knowledge management across Michalsons’ focus areas, keeping up with legal and regulatory developments while writing posts, updates, and judgment summaries in clear, plain language that makes complex legal topics more accessible and easier to understand.
She continually monitors any interesting developments related to the programmes. Has someone been fined, and how can members avoid a similar risk? Has an authority handed down a judgment on an issue that members can learn from? Has a law been updated, and what is the impact? Is there a new law that creates regulatory requirements? This is what Tanika lives for – she helps members filter out the noise and know what is important.
Tanika also helps clients navigate emerging Intellectual Property Law issues stemming from the widespread use of AI as part of AI Governance. Lastly, through project management, she ensures that people complete the tasks they need to complete on time which helps clients achieve their outcomes better.
Before joining Michalsons, Tanika focused her studies on Cyber Law, Intellectual Property Law, and emerging AI-related legal issues. Her background in history and psychology strongly developed her interest in research, writing, and interpretation, while her community work shaped her interest in making complex legal concepts more practical, accessible, and people focused.
