It almost goes without saying that access control is important. Being able to keep other people out keeps us safe, and knowing who got in gives us power if something goes wrong. But that power requires you to hold a lot of information. Every time someone enters a controlled gated premises – surveillancing CCTV footage, collecting visitors’ biometric data, signing a visitors register with your ID – personal information is collected. At scale, that adds up fast. And so do your responsibilities.

The Information Regulator has published a draft Gated Access Code of Conduct under POPIA, setting out how organisations must handle personal information gathered through security guards, visitor management systems, CCTV, and similar controls. Unlike a guidance note, a Code of Conduct carries real compliance weight and the clock is ticking.

The Gated Access Code of Conduct sits on top of POPIA’s eight conditions for lawful processing, and it puts a sector that has long flown under the radar firmly in the regulator’s sights.
