Let’s show you our process for designing cloud computing compliance for ZAR’s public service.
Challenge
In 2022, the South African Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) gazetted a directive on cloud computing in the public service. The directive instructs government departments on adopting, using, managing, scaling, and terminating cloud services.
However, the public service found the directive challenging to understand, difficult to folllow, and didn’t know what the DPSA expected from them.
Microsoft South Africa recognised this need and asked us to help them communicate the directive in an accessible way to the public service.
Process
Step 1: Define the problem
To start, the problem was that the directive wasn’t designed with its audience in mind: a complex mix of technical and non-technical professionals.
Step 2: Empathise
Together with Microsoft, we then interviewed key people who needed to rely on the guide. The interviews aimed to understand the users’ needs, motivations, and pain points.
Step 3: Research and ideate
Afterwards, we discovered that the public service prefers to have information presented graphically and with minimal text in the form of a white paper.
Step 4: Prototype
Next, we created a simple and easy-to-understand mockup of the white paper so users could provide feedback and suggest improvements.
Step 5: Test
We then tested the prototype with sample users to get their feedback and experience with the white papers.
Step 6: Implement and iterate
In the end, we finalised the design and put it into practice.
Results
The result was a beautifully designed white paper explicitly tailored to users in the public service, delivering the right information at the right time.
