The regulator and Michalsons share a common goal: protecting people from harm and promoting accountability through transparency. In South Africa, the regulator enforces the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) by overseeing their implementation.
In 2022, the regulator launched a platform on its website that lets people lodge POPIA and PAIA complaints directly with the regulator if a responsible party infringes their privacy or denies them access to certain records. The regulator has also launched draft rules and regulations to guide how it enforces POPIA and PAIA and resolves complaints.
Because the regulator is working hard to put measures in place to enforce POPIA and PAIA, there will always be events in your journey that will require you to engage with the regulator. For example, a change in the law, a court judgment, an enforcement notice, registering your officer, obtaining prior authorisation, or a data breach involving personal data.
