It looks like the Protection of Information Bill (POIB) is going to be renamed the Protection of State Information Bill. People will probably call it POSIB or POSI. This makes a lot of sense and will help to avoid confusion. In the past, many people have been confused between the Protection of Information Bill and the Protection of Personal Information Bill (POPI).
What is the Protection of State Information Bill?
Just to be clear, in case you are confused:
- the Protection of Information Bill – the name of the old Bill that regulated the classification of information as secret. The one all the fuss has been about.
- the Protection of State Information Bill – the new name of the Protection of Information Bill. Maybe it will be referred to as POSI or POSIB.
- the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) – something totally different. This is South Africa’s data protection legislation that relates to personal information.
