What we use AI for

We experiment with and use many different AI models. But we evaluate each model and add it to our AI register before we use it on client work. Since AI capabilities are improving almost daily, we find innovative use cases every so often, but we consistently use AI to:

  • Support legal research and summarising documents.
  • Challenge our thinking, identify gaps, and test how our templates and approaches perform in different scenarios.
  • Assist us at different stages of the document-drafting process, following our tried-and-tested methodologies.
  • Administrative tasks like formatting and proofreading.
  • Create images for our website and various communications.

We know when not to use AI.

AI does not give you legal advice. It does not make decisions on your matter, and it never operates without human direction. We believe that a combination of human and artificial intelligence produces the best outcomes for our clients. But some work requires human judgement alone.

Our lawyers remain accountable

The human lawyers at Michalsons are accountable for all work that we do, including AI-assisted or AI-enabled work. Our role as experts includes quality assurance; working with us means that you can be confident that the information and advice we provide has been assessed by experienced lawyers, considered in the context of your matter, and informed by our professional judgement and expertise.

Our AI governance programme

We do not use new AI on an ad hoc basis. Our AI governance programme sets out which tools we may use, how we assess them, who may use them, and how we monitor their use. We train our people on responsible AI use and review our approach as the technology and the law evolve.

We use AI to work more efficiently, challenge our thinking, test our approaches and identify issues that may need further investigation. This means that you get the benefit of an additional perspective, while our lawyers remain responsible for the legal analysis, professional judgement and advice you receive.
