Cybercrime in Africa is growing, and with new opportunities comes new vulnerabilities in the online environment. AFRIPOL and INTERPOL have joined forces in a series of efforts designed to combat these increasing threats: AFRICA Cyber Surge. The initiative focuses on cross-border cooperation in dismantling cybercriminal networks. This collaboration signals dedication to growing Africa’s digital infrastructure, securing its online environment, and forming strong international partnerships.
What is the Africa Cyber Surge Operation?
Launched in 2021, the Africa Cyber Surge Operation is an ongoing initiative that aims to address cybercrime at a continental level. Through coordinated efforts, law enforcement agencies across Africa work together to investigate and dismantle cybercrime syndicates involved in ransomware attacks, phishing schemes, and data breaches.
How ACS 3.0 will combat cybercrime in Africa
ACS 3.0 enhances the region’s ability to respond to these challenges through improved international cooperation and technical capabilities.
- Enhanced regional collaboration. ACS 3.0 brings together 19 African countries to facilitate joint operations and rapid response to cybercrime incidents, including Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon.
- Capacity-building. The operation seeks to strengthen national law enforcement agencies by providing training, resources, and forming partnerships with the private sector to address emerging threats.
- Targeting cybercrime networks. ACS 3.0 places an even greater emphasis on targeting cybercrime syndicates that operate in multiple countries.
- Arrests and takedowns. The operation has already led to multiple arrests and the shutdown of over 600 websites used for malicious activities.
