No, it doesn’t but there are a few things to think about. POPIA does not apply to your processing of personal information that happened before it commenced on 1 July 2020. For example, if you collected personal information on 1 March 2019, you cannot go back in time and notify data subjects at the time of collection. Time travel is obviously not possible.
Any processing after 1 July 2021 must comply
But if you process personal information after 1 July 2021, you must comply with the lawful conditions for processing personal information. So for example, if you collected on 1 March 2019 but you still store that personal information, you must store it in accordance with POPIA. If you plan to use that personal information to, for example, send an electronic communication to the data subjects, that new processing activity that happens after 1 July 2021 must comply with the conditions for lawful processing.
Make sure you’re authorised to process after 1 July 2021
You’ll also have to make sure that you get proper authorisation when processing special personal information, as well as children’s information.
