What is personal information?

john-giles-for-michalsons-018There is a body of law developing relating to personal information.  It is therefore critical to know exactly what personal information is.  It is defined in law, but has not been interpreted by a court.  It could also change in the not too distant future.

Personal information is currently defined in various different pieces of legislation (or potential legislation).  They are the:

  1. Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAI Act);
  2. Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECT Act)
  3. Protection of Personal Information Bill (PPI Act)
  4. Protection of Information Bill (PI Act)
