Infosec versus other concepts (e.g hacking)

More than protecting against “hacking”:Information security involves more than simply protecting against intrusions by “hackers”. (Historically the term “hacker” was used to describe an individual with skill and knowledge relating to operating systems and programming, whereas the term “cracker” described a person who intentionally sought access to computer systems or networks with dishonest intention.  These terms became confused over time in the mass media, and now the two terms are effectively used interchangeably to describe the latter definition.)

It is also broader than criminal activity affecting information and information systems, such as “cyber crime” (as defined in chapter 13, sections 85 to 89 of the ECT Act). Information security includes the use of technology, policies and procedures to facilitate electronic transactions, the  implementation of digital rights management (protecting electronic documentation from unauthorised copying and use), the prevention or detection of the accidental corruption of information, the encryption of sensitive information, the verification of the authenticity of electronic documents, and a whole host of other applications that do not involve intrusions into computer systems.
